During the many years of going to gyms like Powerhouse and 24-Hour Fitness, I observed the fitness centers ebbs and flows. Around Thanksgiving, it would become a ghost town. People were busy with holiday parties and travel. Once everyone sobered up from their New Years celebrations, there is an influx of people joining bootcamps and headed to work out to lose the 20 pounds that crept up over the year.
I would work out like crazy during the holidays and take January off. In February, the novelty of working out wore off for most, so I would return to my regular fitness schedule. By Spring Break, only the strongest, most dedicated would still be there religiously.
I recently had a conversation with my homegirl. We were almost crying, literally, because pomegranate season is over. This is pretty much the last fruit available for the winter. LITERALLY. Anything else for us is imported from another country. We shared an A-HA moment. We are really still in hibernation season. If you’re in a cold weather climate area, there is a period of time when there is absolutely nothing to harvest. You should be eating anything that has been stored and can be preserved including HERBS.
Why are New Year's Resolutions so hard to keep? You are going against the natural order of things. Should we start in March during the spring? The time changes. There are more daylight hours. You are coming out of your winter blues and feeling naturally more motivated.
In Chicago, it is cold and dreary until March. Sunny days in the winter are deceptive. It looks like a fun day to go outside until you go outside and the hawk (wind) gets you. You want to cuddle up under a blanket watching Netflix drinking a Moscato and snacking on popcorn. NOT dragging yourself out to exercise!
Is this why our New Year’s resolutions fizzle out so quickly? Are we starting too early and going against nature?
For me, I am working on closing out winter projects. Letting go of clothing that is too small (children) or unwanted (me). My Liver Cleanse group is purging and resetting. We are laying the foundation for our physical, mental, and spiritual selves. If there is anything not serving me to my highest good, I am walking away from it. In March, as the weather breaks, I will return to my longer walks, bike rides with AJ, and grounding at the beach with Aric. It would be time to shed some extra winter pounds and look forward to warmer and sunnier days.
Pomegranates, Pomegranates. I didn't have ONE this season🙄. Every store I tried to purchase them from had that (3) identification code/label. I'm looking forward to next season!
I totally agree. The winter weather in the Chicagoland area can be depressing. You have to work hard to stay motivated to do anything that takes a lot of effort. We should definitely be hibernating. I even vote for no work until Spring! I want to be cozy.
