Who came up with the concept of a New Year's resolution?
You choose something to begin on January 1st. How many individuals claim they want to start or quit something, only to abandon it by the month's end?
If you're like me, the darker months lead to decreased productivity during the evening hours. The lack of sunlight and natural vitamin D dampens my mood. Even now, as I type this at 5:30pm on New Year's Eve, I'm feeling sleepy. Yawning. Ready to go to bed. Starting something new and staying consistent is tough when it's dark and cold. Warm comfort foods and drinks are tempting everywhere. The thought of staying in your cozy bed is more appealing than venturing out into the cold and going to the gym.
Why not elevate what you're currently working on? Consider it an upgrade or revision—a sustainable "tweak." Alternatively, you could wait until March. Spring is the ideal time to plant seeds and start anew. The days become slightly longer and, ideally, a bit warmer. People's moods tend to be lighter and more optimistic.
If you need to begin something now, allow yourself some leniency. Think about gradually increasing your efforts. Take small steps. If you stumble, simply continue and move forward. Focusing on the mistake will only disrupt your thoughts and dishearten you. A positive mindset, mental resilience, and consistency are essential to reach your objectives.
Happy 2025!
