As a woman, a urinary tract infection (UTI) is not all that uncommon. Symptoms are typically frequent urination, a burning sensation, and potential other bladder discomfort. We know what it is when it happens. I have a pretty solid home remedy that works! MOST OF THE TIME!
Until it turns into a KIDNEY INFRECTION or worse SEPSIS where the bacteria go into the blood.
Once it progresses, you can experience fatigue, vomiting, fever, and dark urine. Go to URGENT CARE IMMEDIATELY.
What I did not know is for peri-menopausal and menopausal women UTIs are a little different. For a menstruating woman, estrogen levels are normal. Estrogen provides a protective bacterium that helps fight the bad bacteria “down there”. As your body changes through the menopausal process, estrogen drops and what happens to the protective bacteria? POOF! As a result, you may experience more frequent UTIs or a UTI can progress very quickly into further infection. A woman may experience vaginal atrophy where the vagina and urethra dry and thins out that can also lead to urinary tract infections.
If you are in menopause does this mean there is no hope to increase estrogen? NOT at ALL! Some estrogen is also produced endocrine glands from fatty tissue.
What can be done? Here are the basics for prevention:
Stay hydrated
Drink a few ounces of pure cranberry juice occasionally (for prevention)
Include herbs like Uva Ursi and Hydrangea which are natural diuretics
Evaluate supplements to support the endocrine system.
Eat an estrogen friendly diet
Exercise regularly
Do those Kegel’s and pelvic floor exercises!
Manage your STRESS!
The REAL DEEP work depends on the individual. Are you a healthy woman with no other pre-existing conditions? Do you have other health problems that need to be addressed also? Do you still have a cycle but know that you are in that perimenopausal stage?
Book HERE for a consultation to review your options and we can discuss how deep you would like to go into your PERSONAL HEALTH JOURNEY.
Hugs and love!
